Animal Reproduction and AI quality standard by ZDS

In cooperation with two reference laboratories FBF and ZDS had established a semen quality standard. This covers sperm quality monitoring using advanced methods, analysis of semen processing, regular training of AI station personnel, and the work according to semen processing guidelines.

The quality standard was developed by the research projects of FBF. These projects have dealt with the quality control of semen, development of new evaluation methodology, analysis of evaluation methods and fertility traits.

Elements of AI quality standard by ZDS

• Quality management by a manual for AI station
• External Monitoring of semen quality
• Monitoring in the AI station
• External audits in the AI stations

For the farmers there is a range of parameters that were ensured by the AI station (when stored):

• 1.8 billion spermatozoa per semen doses
• 65% motility of spermatozoa per ejaculate
• 80 ml per sperm doses

The parameters are evaluated by the reference laboratories as independent control.

The AI quality standard by ZDS will be developed. All important questions in the field of AI stations are adapted by FBF. There were new projects set on these bases. If there are following important results for the daily work of boar studs they will be implemented in the AI quality standard. For that it is important that the AI quality standard and the research are linked.
